Much like the other natural stone that we’ve discussed, travertine floors are a stylish, long-lasting floor option, making them a popular choice for many homeowners everywhere. Not to mention, it’s one of our favorites, too!
But, all of those awesome advantages don’t come without any pitfalls. It’s durable, but it’s vulnerable; it’s attractive, but it’s susceptible to damage; it’s long-lasting, but it can be expensive.
With all of that being said, it goes without saying that travertine is worth taking care of! And here’s how to do it.
CLEAN SWIFTLY, AND WITH THE APPROVED CLEANING PRODUCTS.
The composition of travertine floors is similar to that of other natural stone that we’ve discussed in the past, meaning that daily cleaning methods are pretty much the same. Use warm water (no acidic materials!), a sponge, and a towel to lightly dry. Spills? Act quickly to deter lasting damage like stains.
MOP AND DUST MOP REGULARLY WITH APPROVED TRAVERTINE CLEANERS.
If you can, avoid using a vacuum on your floors to prevent scratching. Instead, opt for easy dust mops to pick up any and all dust that may be lingering. For regular ol’ mopping, warm water and any of these approved travertine cleaning products is the name of the game!
USE RUGS FOR HIGH-TRAFFIC AREAS.
Like all other natural stone options, travertine floors are susceptible to stains and etching. Appearance is obviously an important part of owning travertine. Still, you should find a balance between enjoying its appearance and doing what needs to be done to maintain it. That’s where rugs come in. Placing rugs in popular, high-traffic areas of your home will prevent scratching and protect its longevity!
CONSIDER A PROFESSIONAL SEALING JOB.
Professional sealing for travertine works just like it does for other types of natural stone. It’s porous, and a seal acts as a protective barrier between it and anything that may harm it. Clean it, seal it, and enjoy your travertine as it was meant to be enjoyed!
