The Truth About Anti Microbial Shields

Cleaning and disinfecting have never been more of a priority than now in the wake of the coronavirus. But before you rest in the assumption that your home or office is truly germ-free, there are some things should know. One-time disinfection does not last. As soon as a surface is touched, breathed or coughed on, it becomes recontaminated. While it’s impossible and impractical to live or work on a germ-free environment, an antimicrobial shield can help enhance protection.

You may have heard or seen claims that certain products or professional disinfecting companies can guarantee 90 protection after disinfecting. A guarantee is a strong claim, but enhanced protection is available through antimicrobial shields, like Carpet Tech’s CT Shield. Independent studies have shown antimicrobial shields can prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi, and certain viruses from getting on the surface for a period of time. The problem with a guarantee is that many factors can impact the effectiveness of antimicrobial shields.

Surface preparation is key. If you treat a dirty or unstable surface, when the dirt comes off or the surface is disturbed, some of the antimicrobials will be removed with it. Also, be aware that abrasive or caustic cleaners will also shorten effective life. Be sure to talk to your disinfecting company about the limits of any antimicrobial barrier being applied.

Carpet Tech uses BioShield75, a biostatic surface protectant that works mechanically by providing a durable molecular shield. Microbes that contact this shield are ruptured by long chains of carbon atoms. These positively charged chains attract the negatively charged microbes and are strong enough to rupture these microbes.

Our CT Shield lasts up to 90 days with regular cleaning and traffic. It’s easily applied to porous and non-porous surfaces and is water-based, non-toxic, odorless, and transparent. The EPA has approved it for all contact surfaces.

If you have not implemented an antibacterial shield as part of your disinfecting protocols, you are missing an added layer of protection. There is no better way to extend the life of a disinfecting spray or fog application than with an antimicrobial shield. CT Shield will protect surfaces between recurring professional disinfecting and is a great complement to daily cleaning.
