Spring Cleaning Room-by-room: Living Areas

It seems like just yesterday that Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his underground abode and predicted six more weeks of winter weather. We’re happy to remind you that today, the long winter is finally over and spring has officially arrived. And with that comes spring cleaning. People typically fall into one of two categories when it comes time for these annual chores: you love it or hate it.

We’d like to dedicate this post, and the ones to follow, to our friends who dread spring cleaning. Throughout the season, we’ll be dropping tips, tricks, hacks, and deals that help you tackle your home room-by-room. We’re kicking things off with your living area.

Let’s go.

DECLUTTER

Before you begin to clean, you must declutter. Take anything that does not belong in this room and return it to its proper location. Let this be your mantra: Don’t put it down. Put it away. This will give you access to areas in the living room that are further down our list. Do not waste time cleaning around items that do not belong in this room. When you come across knick-knacks and decor items that you no longer love or need, donate them.

Spend a few minutes organizing your electronics. Find a way to hide unsightly cords. Pro Tip: velcro works wonders here. Attach surge protectors to the back of large electronics or TV stands to keep them off the floor and out of sight.

DUST

Now that you have decluttered, it’s time to get busy. Grab your favorite dust-busting tool – swiffer sweeper, feather duster, vacuum, microfiber towel, etc – and get to work. Be sure to check off the following areas and items:

  • Crown molding, wall corners, baseboards
  • Ceiling fans
  • Windows and window sills
  • Lamps and lamp shades
  • Furniture and bookshelves
  • Edges of wall hangings, mirrors, pictures
  • Electronics

Once you’ve covered these major areas, bust out the vacuum to finish the job. Thoroughly vacuum your carpet and area rugs and don’t forget to move couches and furniture to collect dirt from underneath.

If it feels like there is an excessive amount of dust in your home, it may be time to consider a professional air duct cleaning. Here are three signs you need one.

DISINFECT

With dusting behind you, it’s time to disinfect. This is one of the most important steps in this process, especially because of the wicked flu season we just endured. Clean and disinfect everything, including “high-touch” areas such as light switches, door knobs, remote controls, and gaming devices.
