Don’t Let Dirty Air Ducts Take Your Breath Away

We all know that a clean home is a healthier home. We spend time and money wiping away dirt and germs from contaminated surfaces, but what about the indoor air we’re breathing? The EPA has estimated that the number of air pollutants present in indoor air can be 2-5 (or in some cases, 10) times higher than outdoor levels. Jeremy Diaz, Carpet Tech’s National Air Duct Cleaner’s Association (NADCA) certified specialist says trapped dust and allergens in air ducts can diminish the quality of indoor air and be a source for asthma and allergies.

“Air duct cleaning is such an important part of keeping up with our home. Not only does dust and dirt accumulate in your air ducts, but molds and bacteria can recirculate through your vents as well,” Diaz said. The NADCA recommends air duct cleaning every 3 to 6 years; however, Diaz says pet dander, smoking, and recent home remodeling projects increase the need for regular air duct cleaning, especially if your family has asthma or allergies. 

“These contaminants are pulled into the HVAC system and re-circulated 5 to 7 times per day, on average,” Diaz said. “Over time, this re-circulation causes a build-up of contaminants in the ductwork.”

But how do you know if your air ducts need cleaning? Diaz says to look for external signs like mold around your vent covers. Examine the air supply and return vents for visible dirt. Even noticeably higher energy bills compared to the prior years may be a sign of dirty ductwork. “Cleaning your home’s air ducts isn’t something you should attempt on your own,” cautions Diaz.“It’s a complex process that requires advanced knowledge of HVAC systems, as well as specialized tools.”
