Ct Gives Back: Alstrom Angels

Carpet Tech is dedicated to improving the lives of our customers through friendly, knowledgeable service… but that’s not where our dedication ends. One of our main priorities is to give back to the fantastic community that makes our business so great.

PARTNERSHIP WITH ALSTRÖM ANGELS

This year, we’re excited and proud to be partnered with Alström Angels, a Lubbock organization focused on raising funds and awareness for Alström Syndrome, a progressive hereditary disease. The mission of the organization is as follows:

“Alström Angels is a non-profit charity dedicated to raising funds for Alström Syndrome genetic and medical research, increasing awareness of the rare disease among the general public and medical communities, and improving family support for those affected by the Syndrome.”

Started by Lynn and Cassie Johnston, Alström Angels was born from their three-year-old daughter’s Alström Syndrome diagnosis in 2012. Determined to outshine their sadness by taking positive action, they created an organization that would help families struggling with this disease.

WHAT IS ALSTRÖM SYNDROME?

Alström Syndrome is an extremely rare disease, with only 1,000 recorded diagnoses since it was first described by a Swedish doctor in 1959. Caused by a mutated gene inherited from both parents, Alström Syndrome is devastatingly progressive, with symptoms becoming more and more present as the child grows older. These symptoms include (but are not limited to) blindness, seizures, hypothyroidism, and even kidney or heart failure.

ALSTRÖM ANGELS BEEPBALL TOURNAMENT

One of the first symptoms of Alström Syndrome is progressive vision loss or blindness, which can greatly affect a child who simply wants to have fun. Keeping in line with its mission to improve family support for those affected by the Syndrome, Alström Angels is providing an annual event that is fun for everyone: the annual BEEPball tournament. This year, Carpet Tech is thrilled to be able to sponsor this inclusive, fun-filled event!

BEEPball is similar to baseball, but with a few significant differences: all players play blindfolded! The ball emits a beeping noise in order to let players know when it’s near. BEEPball is appropriate for all players, whether they’re visually impaired or sighted, and experience is not required.

This event is well-received and a joy to watch. We could not be more proud to present this tournament, as it displays the tenacity of these young individuals affected by visual impairment, and shows the strong character of our community here in Lubbock.
