After months of sweater weather, it’s almost time for pool season. Each year, pool owners pull back the winter pool cover hoping to find a crystal clear pool underneath. But that’s not always the case.
Making sure your pool, spa, and hot tub are clean, clear, and PH-balanced are important steps to help you enjoy your time in the water. We recently caught up with Pool Check by Carpet Tech to get the skinny [dip] on opening your pool for the spring.
WHEN TO OPEN THE POOL
The Pool Check team recommends opening things up well before you plan to host your first pool party. Why? Two reasons actually. First, doing so while the weather is relatively cool will help you control algae better. If you wait until May to open the pool, you may face an uphill battle trying to remove algae that has thrived in warmer temperatures.
Secondly, because West Texas weather is a funny phenomenon, temperatures can yo-yo between freezing and blazing in the same week. If you open the pool now, you’ll be prepared to hop in if the opportunity presents itself. If you’re worried about wind inviting dust or tumbleweeds into the pool this spring, you can invest in a solar blanket for your pool. These clear covers help to minimize foreign objects in your pool and they also warm up the water.
THE WORK BEGINS
Now that you know when to open your pool, let’s take a look at how you do it. The first step is to remove and dry out the cover. You may have to bribe a buddy, neighbor, or one of your kids to help with this step, as it’s not suitable for only one person. Next, remove any winter plugs from your equipment and reconnect the system. While you’re troubleshooting any issues here, you can go ahead and drop the hose in the pool to begin topping off the water level.
From here, bust out your lab coat and beakers because it’s time to do science. Maintaining the proper chemistry is critical to ensuring your pool is safe for swimming. Test the following elements: chlorine, pH, and alkalinity, and add chemicals to adjust.
While the chemicals are setting in, add some elbow grease to the mix. Use your skimmer, pole brush, and vacuum to remove build up from the walls.
